The goal for this project was to take the existing metal building, adjacent to City Hall and acting as the Facilities Management Department and storage shed, and convert it into a usable space for the Smithville Senior Center. A3G worked with the City, along with a group from the Senior Center, to design a multi-function space that suited their needs and fell within the allowable budget.
Spaces include a 1,500sf multi-function space, a serving kitchen, office, exercise room, accessible restrooms and a 930sf storage space for the City, which is accessed from the rear of the building.
The project included all new interior and exterior finishes. The interior finish included new painted walls, acoustical ceilings and wood laminate flooring. The exterior included a combination of veneer limestone and brick, EIFS, aluminum doors and windows, and solar shades above the south and west-facing windows. Adding the EIFS (Exterior Insulating Finish System) to the structure increased the efficiency of the building, and the use of solar shading devices helped to reduce solar gain and glare. A new paved parking lot and landscaping were designed to establish the corner. Exterior lighting was added to provide security, and a door and sidewalk were added to the north side of the facility to provide a connection to city hall.
